Microsoft’s HoloLens 2 is Reshaping Medicine with Mixed Reality

Have you ever had a medical issue that required multiple hands and eyes to solve the problem? I have and if you have too, then you know if can be quite a frustrating process. Every time you get referred to another provider it can often be like starting from scratch. You might find yourself filling out forms very similar to ones you’ve done before and being asked the same questions over and over again with each new face. These redundancies can make for an extremely inefficient care experience for patients and contribute to increasing health care cost.

Well, Microsoft’s HoloLens is here to change that. With HoloLens 2, health professionals can connect with remote experts, and call up patient data and go beyond x-rays to consult MRI images in 3D at the point of care. Microsoft is using mixed reality to empower teams to work securely and enhance patient treatment reducing time-to-care.

Personalizing Telemedicine

Melissa Decapua explains that “the HoloLens will altogether transform the way nurses think about telemedicine. No longer will patient and provider sit behind two screens with a compartmentalized view of each other’s world. The HoloLens could allow nurses to send themselves into the patient’s environment and interact more realistically.  Suddenly, telemedicine becomes personalized and allows for a more effective therapeutic use of self.”

Accelerating Diagnoses

Microsoft states that mixed reality is empowering providers, payors, and health science experts to reimagine healthcare by accelerating diagnoses and reducing time-to-care, enabling personalization and improving outcomes.

“Mixed reality connects us to all the information and specialist care we need, right at the patient’s bedside, and all in one headset.”

The future landscape of medicine is looking to be a completely different experience that the past and I’m all here for it. More efficient, more accurate, and more cost-effective care is something that we can all appreciate and it’s amazing to see how new developments, like HoloLens is making that happen.
