Must-Try Foods in Amsterdam: A Culinary Adventure

ByMercedes Diane Griffin Forbes June 18, 2024December 12, 2024

Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities in the world. It’s a city that charms with its canals, historic architecture, and vibrant culture. But let’s be real—the food is what really steals the show. From savory snacks to decadent desserts, Amsterdam offers a culinary journey that’s sure to delight your taste buds.

Mercedes outside Amsterdam’s historic Schreierstoren Bar

The Historic Schreierstoren Bar

Nestled in a 17th-century tower, Schreierstoren bar offers a unique blend of history and local brews. This bar was once part of the medieval city wall and now stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s rich past. Here, I enjoyed a cold glass of brouwerijen beer, a local favorite. The atmosphere was perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring the city.

Bitterballen: The Quintessential Dutch Snack

You can’t talk about Amsterdam’s food scene without mentioning bitterballen. These small, deep-fried balls of meat ragout are crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. Perfectly paired with mustard, they’re a popular snack in bars and cafes. While at Schreierstoren bar, I had my first bitterballen, and it was love at first bite.

Cheese: A Dutch Staple

Amsterdam and cheese go hand in hand. Dutch cheese, known for its rich and creamy texture, comes in many varieties. During my food tour, I sampled a plethora of cheeses, each more delightful than the last. Gouda, Edam, and Leyden were just a few of the types I tried, often paired with tangy sauces that enhanced their flavors. Fried cheese, with its crispy exterior and melty core, was another highlight.

Cheese Tasting at Henri Willig

For a true cheese lover’s experience, I visited Henri Willig, a renowned cheese shop in Amsterdam. Here, I took part in a cheese tasting that was both educational and delicious. The staff guided me through different types of cheese, each paired with unique sauces. I couldn’t resist stocking up on cheese to bring home, ensuring I had a taste of Amsterdam even after my trip.

Fresh Fish Dishes: A Taste of the Sea

Amsterdam’s connection to the sea is evident in its delectable fish dishes. At Gezond & Lekker, I had the chance to try their famous herring. Although herring is a Dutch specialty, typically enjoyed raw with onions and pickles,

I opted for kibbeling instead. Kibbeling, made from fresh North Sea fish, is deep-fried and served with a tangy dipping sauce. It was a delightful alternative for those who prefer cooked fish over raw.

Waffles: Best When Hot

No visit to Amsterdam would be complete without indulging in waffles. These aren’t just any waffles; they’re superior when served hot, straight from the iron. Topped with syrup or powdered sugar, they are a treat that melts in your mouth. I found myself savoring every bite, and they quickly became one of my favorite Dutch treats.

Pancakes: A Dutch Delight

Another must-try in Amsterdam is Dutch pancakes, or “pannenkoeken.” These are not your typical pancakes. They are large, thin, and can be topped with a variety of ingredients, both sweet and savory. I enjoyed mine with a mix of apples and cinnamon, and it was simply divine. There are countless pancake houses in the city, each offering its unique twist on this classic dish.

A Sweet Ending at Tony’s Chocolate Factory

Our culinary tour wrapped up with a visit to Tony’s Chocolate Factory. This local favorite is known for its ethical approach to chocolate making and its delicious products. Touring the factory, I learned about the process of making chocolate and sampled some of the best chocolate I’ve ever tasted. It was the perfect way to end our food adventure in Amsterdam.

An Unforgettable Culinary Experience

Amsterdam’s food scene is as rich and diverse as its history. From the savory delights of bitterballen and meatballs to the sweet indulgence of hot waffles and chocolate, and the fresh taste of fish dishes, there’s something for every palate. I highly recommend taking a food tour to immerse yourself in the city’s culinary heritage. You can book your tour here.

Bon appétit! 😋🍽️
