“The X-Files” Revisited: A Queer and Feminist Take

Jenny Owen Youngs and Kristin Russo, the dynamic duo behind the wildly successful podcast “Buffering the Vampire Slayer,” are back at it again with their latest project, “The eX-Files.” And let me tell you, it’s out of this world.

In “The eX-Files,” Youngs and Russo rewatch every episode of the iconic ’90s sci-fi show “The X-Files,” with Youngs as the expert and Russo as the newbie. But don’t worry, there are no spoilers here. The podcast is a spoiler-free zone.

What sets “The eX-Files” apart from other rewatch podcasts is the duo’s queer and feminist lens. They tackle aliens, actors, and ’90s nostalgia with critical discussions that are both insightful and hilarious. And with much-lauded guests like Hrishikesh Hirway of “Song Exploder” joining them, the podcast is sure to be a hit.

But this isn’t Youngs and Russo’s first rodeo. Their first project, “Buffering the Vampire Slayer,” started as a podcast venture between a married couple to explore every episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” It quickly became a pop culture phenomenon, selling out live shows across the country and earning them praise from The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, TIME, and more.

List here!

Youngs, who is also a singer-songwriter, has released numerous albums and EPs and recently co-wrote the chart-topping, five-time platinum single “High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco. Russo, on the other hand, is a writer, educator, and consultant with a focus on LGBTQ issues.

Together, Youngs and Russo are a force to be reckoned with. Their infectious chemistry and joyful exploration of story earned “Buffering the Vampire Slayer” a spot on top rewatch podcast lists, and “The eX-Files” is sure to follow suit.

So if you’re looking for a podcast that’s out of this world, tune in to “The eX-Files” every Wednesday on all major podcast platforms. It’s a credit to Youngs and Russo’s relationship that they can create such amazing content together, even as ex-wives. And if their past success is any indication, “The eX-Files” is going to be a blast.
