Divide and Dissolve’s New Single and Video “We Are Really Worried About You” Takes on White Supremacy
Divide and Dissolve, the dynamic drone duo, are back and better than ever with their new single and video, “We Are Really Worried About You”, from their upcoming album, Gas Lit. The album, produced by Ruban Nielson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, is set to be released in January 2021 under Invada Records. The band members, Takaiya Reed and Sylvie Nehill, are excited to share their new project and are eager to continue their fight for Indigenous Sovereignty, Black and Indigenous Liberation, Water, Earth, and Indigenous land given back.
The new single is an intense call to transformation and freedom that seeks to undermine and destroy the white supremacist colonial framework. The song starts with Takaiya’s stunning saxophone sound that resonates like a siren’s call, beautifully dangerous. The saxophone gives way to Sylvie’s crushing percussion and heavy guitar riffs, revealing the magnitude of their exhilarating multidimensional sonic, and powerful expression of their message. The video directors, Sepand Mashiahof, expand on the song’s theme, stating that “The world is structured to mold us down into stunted vessels that have to gaslight ourselves of our truths/experiences just to survive.” The video is a powerful expression of that process, reflecting the desperation to be heard and the stonewall silence that pushes individuals into the void of perpetual self-doubt and self-sabotage.
Divide and Dissolve have been known for their impeccable combination of many worlds, identities, and genres that destroy colonized parameters altogether. Their music carries a fight and their ancestors’ fight forward each day, using the power of their performances to draw attention to the ongoing battle against systemic oppression. The band’s aim is to secure Black futures, liberation, and freedom, demand Indigenous Sovereignty, uplift people of color’s experiences, and destroy white supremacy.
The duo is made up of Takaiya Reed, who is Black and Tsalagi [Cherokee], and Sylvie Nehill, who is Māori. Their music is a transformative rite of passage best experienced live, with a desire to be chewed, spat out, and restored. Their sound expands your brainwaves while punching you in the stomach. Their new album, Gas Lit, promises to be no different. It’s a reflection of their commitment to fighting against oppressive power dynamics, genocide, racism, white supremacy, and colonization.
Geoff Barrow, from Invada Records, has expressed his excitement over the signing of Divide and Dissolve, stating that “Takaiya & Sylvie are brilliant people who feel like part of the Invada family already.” He goes on to say, “I’m really looking forward to them releasing their new album with us and we 100% support their fight to abolish white supremacy with their crushing doom.”
