Sonic the Hedgehog, a Movie About Finding Your Person, Perfect for Singles Awareness Day

Being single can be hard, especially when it seems like everyone around you is coupled up and living happily ever after. However, once you reach a certain age you come to know that those happy smiles often are masks covering ill-matched dysfunctional relationships rooted in the lack of self-love.

I’ve always been a romantic and I love Valentine’s Day. I think celebrating love and taking time out to find that one special gift that reminds others how much you care is a beautiful thing. Last year was my first Valentine’s Day as a single woman in a long time and I was down the entire day.

This year is a very different story though. I’ve come to a place where I’m happy and content and overflowing with a love of myself that alluded me for a long time. In the spirit of that I decided to celebrate Single Awareness Day and I had the best day ever.

I started off the day with a fun office party at my WeWork location in DC. One thing I love about working out of WeWork is that there is always something interesting going on and it’s a very community-oriented atmosphere. We had freshly popped popcorn, chocolate candy, beer, and as always lots of laughs.

Then, I had an early dinner of my favorite meal, fish, and chips, at Mr. Henry’s in Washington, DC. I figured you can’t go wrong with fish and chips. It’s my go-to meal all over the world. Unfortunately, the fish and chips sucked, I mean really really sucked. I couldn’t even eat it. It was that bad…but hey they can’t all be winners…LOL! Thankfully, I was able to use one of my Nift gift cards so I got $15 taken off my bill.

The highlight of the evening was going to see the new Sonic the Hedgehog movie. I must say that Sonic was absolutely adorable and, with the way he is portrayed, you are immediately drawn into his story.

You have this beautiful blue hedgehog with extraordinary abilities who is forced to face life constantly on the run and alone. When he’s sad, you feel sad, and when he becomes overwhelmed by emotions and goes supersonic, blowing everything up around him, you are right there with him.

Every single person can identify with a story of loneliness, wanting to share yourself with someone, and wondering if will you always have to go through life alone. Like Sonic, the longing may even make you feel like you want to explode sometimes.

The important thing about Sonic that resonated with me though was that he had the one major thing that any of us needs. He knew he was special. He wasn’t afraid to put himself out there to help others. He wasn’t afraid to take risks. He was confident and full of appreciation for what made him unique.

It’s through his courageous efforts and selflessness that he eventually finds his person and through that person a family and a home. This movie is all about the power of self-love, friendship, and community. It makes you take a hard look at what you value in life and how far are you willing to go to protect it. It was definitely the perfect flick for Singles Awareness Day.

I definitely hope to find love again one day but in the meantime, I’m enjoying flying solo. Today was a great day and I’m so happy I didn’t spend another year sulking over being single. Instead, I celebrated myself, I celebrated life, and I had a wonderful time.

If you’re single, I hope you are out there living your best life. Remember that all things come in time and that if you want to one day be a good partner to someone else you have to first love yourself. (◕‿◕✿)

  1. Great twist! I have not seen the Sonic movie yet, but it is on my To Do List. My boys love the video game so they have requested to see it. Now, I have something to think about as I watch and enjoy the film. Thank you!
