Embracing the Journey: A Personal Odyssey of Doubt, Discovery, and Change

Dear DG Speaks Community,

As I pen down these words, I’m compelled to share with you a deeply personal journey—one marked by doubt, self-discovery, and transformative change. My hope is that my story resonates with some of you, serving as a testament to the power we hold within ourselves to navigate the complexities of life.

It all began during our annual Easter gathering in my grandmother’s cozy North Carolina home. A curious 12-year-old, I questioned the tales I had learned in church, setting the stage for a lifelong dance with doubt. Little did I know, this initial spark would become a guiding force in my life.

Teenage years brought bouts of depression, fueled by the ebb and flow of my father’s presence, struggles with identity, and the sense of not fitting neatly into societal expectations. College became my haven, a place where I delved into diverse belief systems through comparative religion. The journey led me through Buddhism, Baha’ism, spirituality, Deism, Atheism, and ultimately, Humanism.

In the crucible of doubt, I discovered the transformative power of self-discovery. Shedding layers of uncertainty, I embraced a worldview that liberated me from the chains of depression and the fear of eternal damnation. Humanism became my guiding light, a philosophy rooted in reason, empathy, and the celebration of our shared humanity.

My story is not just a personal narrative—it’s an invitation for you to explore your own journey. Doubt is not a weakness but a compass guiding us toward a deeper understanding of ourselves. In moments of self-discovery, we uncover layers of our identity, paving the way for transformative change.

As we navigate the tapestry of doubt, self-discovery, and change together, let’s celebrate the resilience of the human spirit. Embrace your journey, question boldly, and evolve fearlessly. In doubt, there’s strength. In self-discovery, there’s liberation. In transformative change, there’s growth.

With gratitude and openness,

Mercedes Diane Griffin Forbes
