James Mangold and Cynthia Erivo Honored at 2025 Sundance Gala: A Celebration of Bold Storytelling

In a move that underscores the magic of storytelling, the Sundance Institute announced that acclaimed filmmaker James Mangold and celebrated multi-hyphenate Cynthia Erivo will receive top honors at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival Gala. Set for January 24, 2025, at the stunning Grand Hyatt Deer Valley in Utah, this gala fundraiser promises to be a night filled with inspiration and celebration.

As a longtime champion of independent artists, the Sundance Institute uses this annual event to recognize outstanding creative voices while raising essential funds to support its year-round programs, including labs, grants, and public outreach.

Honoring James Mangold: A Trailblazer in Cinema

James Mangold, known for his remarkable ability to weave powerful human stories into diverse genres, will receive the Trailblazer Award. From early breakthroughs like Heavy—winner of the 1995 Sundance Special Jury Prize for Directing—to blockbusters like Walk the Line and Ford v. Ferrari, Mangold’s career reflects the enduring impact of authenticity and artistry in film.

Sundance has been a foundational part of Mangold’s journey. In the early ’90s, he joined the Institute’s Screenwriters and Directors Labs, developing the script for Copland—a pivotal moment in his career. Reflecting on this recognition, Mangold shared,

“Sundance has been many things in my life: a faraway dream, a laboratory for Copland, and a festival where I debuted Heavy. To receive this honor feels deeply meaningful.”

Celebrating Cynthia Erivo: A Visionary in Every Medium

Cynthia Erivo, a dynamic force in entertainment, will be honored with the Visionary Award. Known for her unforgettable roles in The Color Purple and Harriet, Erivo has captivated audiences on both stage and screen. Currently dazzling in Wicked as Elphaba, she exemplifies creativity and depth in every performance.

Erivo’s connection to Sundance runs deep, from serving as a jury member in 2021 to premiering Drift at the Festival in 2023. Upon receiving this honor, Erivo expressed her gratitude:

“Sundance has always been a sanctuary for bold voices and transformative narratives. This recognition inspires me to continue championing diverse stories that connect, challenge, and uplift us all.”

A Night of Celebration and Impact

This gala, co-chaired by Sundance Institute Board Chair Ebs Burnough and trustee Pat Mitchell, will also highlight other trailblazing artists. The Vanguard Awards Presented by Acura will go to Sean Wang (Dìdi) and co-directors Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie (Sugarcane), further showcasing the profound impact of Sundance on independent cinema.

Amanda Kelso, Acting CEO of Sundance Institute, captured the spirit of the evening, saying,

“James Mangold and Cynthia Erivo embody the very essence of creativity and impact within the arts. Their achievements inspire us all to continue telling bold, authentic stories.”
