Loftstel Petworth and the Hostel as Home Base
Loftstel Petworth hostel was my DC home base during a season when I was always coming, going, working, and figuring life out in motion.
I travel a lot for work, and whenever I was in DC, Loftstel gave me a place to land. It was small, boutique, and familiar in the way hostels can become familiar when the people inside them start remembering your name.
The neighborhood was not polished, but it was safe enough and practical. Three blocks from the metro meant I could reach Chinatown in about fifteen minutes and Dupont Circle in about thirty. For a working traveler, that kind of access matters.
What Hostels Reveal About a City
Hotels often show you a curated version of a place. Hostels show you movement. People arrive with backpacks, accents, work stories, heartbreaks, travel dreams, tight budgets, and plans that may change by morning.
In Petworth, that movement sat inside a neighborhood experiencing gentrification. New bars were popping up. Longtime residents were watching change happen around them. Travelers like me were passing through while other people were trying to hold onto home.
La Professora and the Language of Belonging
My favorite part of Loftstel was Lucia, the housekeeper. She always remembered me and insisted that I speak Spanish with her. So I called her La Professora.
That small ritual meant something. As a Black Latina woman who has moved through many countries and many versions of home, I know language can be an anchor. It can make an ordinary hallway feel like a place where part of you gets recognized.

Why Loftstel Was Worth Caring About
Loftstel was worth caring about because it held the everyday intimacy of travel. It was not luxury. It was not trying to be. It was a landing place, and sometimes that is exactly what a traveler needs.
