Take a Deep Breath and Unwind in the NC Blue Ridge Mountains

You know how it is when things turn out just the way you thought you wanted them to, and now it’s time for you to move on. You start to feel that tightness in your chest. You feel that frog in your throat, that bubbling in your stomach, the sheer horror of what now!

This summer has been a season of monumental changes for me. I finished my MPH program. I moved from Washington, DC, my home for the past 17 years. Plus I ended the most significant chapter of my life, being a full-time mom.

Although these changes are spurred by major accomplishments, they are still BIG changes and big changes can feel at bit suffocating. I’ve definitely been feeling the weight of my life moving in a new direction.

Despite being excited about what lies ahead, I can’t help but to also feel anxious about all of the unknown challenges that comes with this new path.

When I’m feeling like life is becoming just a bit too much to deal with communing with nature has always been something that brings me a sense of joy and peace.

According to researchers at Stanford University, I’m not alone. Spending quality time outside in nature has been shown to reduce stress, calm anxiety, and lead to a lower risk of depression in research subjects.

I’m telling you there is nothing like the round of rushing water. Talk about cathartic! It was wonderful just to stop and stare at the waterfall and take a deep breath.

According to the National Park Service, there are several benefits of hiking:

  • Building stronger muscles and bones
  • Improving your sense of balance
  • Improving your heart health
  • Decreasing the risk of certain respiratory problems

If you’re looking to destress and unwind, I highly suggest going for a hike. I think you just might find yourself coming down from the mountain with a refreshing sense of peace and clarity. Just what we all need to enter any new challenge life is throwing our way.
