A Dip into Paradise: Uncovering the Beauty of Lake Mead and Arizona’s Breathtaking Hot Springs
I love nature and I especially love being in places that seem untouched by modernity. There’s a stillness, a calmness to such places that always give me a sense of peace. When I was working in Las Vegas for the CES trade show, I had the opportunity to drive out with friends to take in some of the Arizona desert. One of my friends mentioned, hot springs and that was all I needed to hear. I was immediately like sign me up.
Nestled within the vast expanse of the Mojave Desert lies Lake Mead, a tranquil oasis that offers visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While there are plenty of recreational activities to enjoy at the lake, one of the best ways to truly immerse oneself in its natural beauty is by embarking on the long hike to the Arizona Hot Springs.
The hike itself is not for the faint of heart, as it spans over six miles and requires a steep descent into a narrow canyon. However, if I can do it anyone can. I made the hike despite all my friends thinking that it would be too much for me with my history of back, hip, and knee pain.
The Arizona Hot Springs are a series of natural pools that have been carved out of the rocky terrain by the warm waters of the Colorado River. The pools are surrounded by towering cliffs that create a sense of seclusion and serenity, making it the perfect spot to relax and soak in the healing waters. It is an absolutely breathtaking experience!
Along the way, hikers will be treated to stunning views of the surrounding desert landscape, including vibrant red rocks and towering cacti. The trail itself is well-marked and maintained, but it is important to bring plenty of water and sun protection, as the desert sun can be intense even in cooler months. I went in November and I had to have on several layers for most of the day. I did take some off as I got hot hiking but put them right back on after bathing in the springs.
As you make your way down the canyon, you will find yourself surrounded by towering walls of rock that create a sense of awe and wonder. The trail can be a bit challenging at times, as hikers must navigate over rocks and through narrow passages, but the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the hot springs is truly unparalleled.
Once at the hot springs, you can relax and unwind in the warm waters, taking in the natural beauty of the area. The pools range in temperature from cool to hot, allowing you to choose their preferred level of relaxation. I personally like it hot, LOL. The hot springs are also home to a variety of unique plant and animal life, including bighorn sheep and rare species of fish that are found nowhere else in the world.
The long hike to the Arizona Hot Springs is a must-do for anyone visiting Lake Mead. While the journey can be challenging, I discovered it’s well worth the climb. So pack your water and sunscreen, and get ready for a hot springs adventure that you won’t soon forget.
