Empowering Women in Agriculture: A Global Imperative on International Day of Rural Women
In a world striving for equality and progress, the United Nations stands as a beacon of hope, working tirelessly towards a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive. I’m thankful to have had the opportunity to Intern at the United Nations Headquarters in the Strategic Planning Unit during my graduate studies and witness the impact of their work first hand. As a passionate advocate for positive social change and a nomad on a mission, I find resonance in the UN’s commitment to creating a better world for all.
The Invaluable Contribution of Rural Women to Development
As we observe the International Day of Rural Women, it is imperative to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contribution of rural women to global development. Achieving gender equality and empowering women is not only a moral imperative but a crucial element in the ongoing fight against extreme poverty, hunger, and malnutrition.
Rural women play a pivotal role in the agricultural sector, constituting over 40 percent of the labor force in developing countries. From the fertile lands of Latin America to the expansive fields of Africa and Asia, their dedication to agricultural production, food security, and nutrition is unwavering. Despite their substantial contributions, structural barriers and discriminatory social norms persist, hindering their access to land, credit, and fair prices for their crops.
A Global Call to Action
My experiences across diverse corners of the globe have highlighted the remarkable impact that women can have on sustainable food systems. From the lush landscapes of Colombia to the vibrant fields of North Carolina, I’ve witnessed firsthand the resilience and innovation that women bring to the agricultural sector.
The UN’s dedication to advocating for sustainable food systems and improved global nutrition resonates deeply with my own mission. By focusing on initiatives that increase access, agency, and income for women in agriculture, we contribute not only to gender equality but also to the broader goal of eradicating poverty and hunger.
This International Day of Rural Women provides an opportunity to shed light on the challenges faced by these heroines in the food systems of the world. Less than 15% of landholders worldwide are women, emphasizing the need to address the disparities in land ownership. Additionally, the alarming statistic that over 50% of girls from poor rural households in some countries are married as children underscores the urgency of empowering rural women and girls.
Championing Change Together
Structural barriers and discriminatory social norms continue to constrain women’s decision-making power and political participation in rural households and communities. This International Day, let’s amplify our efforts to dismantle these barriers, ensuring that rural women have equal access to productive resources, public services, and infrastructure.
Through our collective actions, we can create a world where rural areas offer equal opportunities for all. As we celebrate the resilience of rural women this International Day, let’s not only recognize their immense contributions but also commit to creating a future where every woman in rural areas can thrive, breaking free from the chains of poverty, exclusion, and the adverse effects of climate change.
Let us stand united, championing the cause of rural women, and work towards a more equitable and sustainable world for all. Together, with the spirit of collaboration and the commitment to change, we can truly empower women in agriculture and make a positive impact on the global stage.
