Breaking Barriers and Empowering Voices: Native Forward Scholars Fund Receives Prestigious SXSW 2024 Community Service Award

In a groundbreaking moment at SXSW 2024, Native Forward Scholars Fund, led by visionary CEO Angelique Albert, has been honored with the Community Service Award for their remarkable contributions to Native education and empowerment. This recognition not only celebrates their dedication to breaking down systemic barriers but also highlights the vital role of grassroots community activism in driving progressive change.

Angelique Albert, the first Native woman to receive this honor, emphasized the organization’s commitment to fostering Native excellence and inspiring allies to amplify opportunities for Native communities. The award acknowledges their impactful work in overcoming obstacles to higher education, making significant strides in boosting graduation rates for Native students.

Native Forward’s commitment to empowering the next generation of Native leaders is evident in their status as the largest direct provider of scholarships to Native American students. With an impressive 69% graduation rate for undergraduate students and a remarkable 95% for graduate students, they have surpassed national averages, creating a lasting impact on Native education.

SXSW Co-President and Chief Programming Officer Hugh Forrest expressed excitement about recognizing Native Forward and Angelique Albert. This acknowledgment, long overdue, sheds light on the organization’s dedication, having provided over $400 million in scholarships since 1969. Their influential alumni, including Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland and Pulitzer Prize finalist Tommy Orange, showcase the enduring impact of Native Forward’s initiatives.

Angelique Albert’s session at SXSW EDU, “How To Stand Up for Students Post-SCOTUS Affirmative Action,” promises to be a pivotal exploration of Tribal education history and strategies for allies to support Native communities effectively. Additionally, the panel on March 9 featuring notable Native women underscores Native Forward’s commitment to visibility and representation.

As Native Forward Scholars Fund continues its mission, the SXSW 2024 Community Service Award stands as a testament to their tireless efforts in empowering Native voices, dismantling barriers, and creating a brighter future for Native students across the United States.
