Morenita Beer Review: The Portuguese Beer Everyone Underrates
I love when a beer makes me disagree with everybody.
That was exactly how I felt when I tried Morenita by A Fábrica Brewpub in Portugal. I looked at the ratings, tasted the beer, and immediately thought, “Now wait a minute. Why are y’all playing with this beer like this?”
Because honestly, I liked it. A lot.
I tried Morenita at A Cervejaria by O Caçula Group, and it turned out to be one of those beers that reminded me why I do not let ratings make decisions for me. My relationship with beer has been a journey, and I wrote more about that in My Love-Hate Relationship with Beer.
The Beer That Made Me Question the Ratings
My Untappd note for Morenita was very clear: I don’t understand the low rating! I love this beer. It’s delicate and has a perfect flavor profile with the ideal balance of sweet and hoppiness.
And I still stand by that.
Morenita had personality without doing too much. It was not loud. It was not heavy. It did not try to prove anything. It simply tasted good in a way that felt balanced and thoughtful.
That is my kind of beer.

- My First Reaction: I loved it and did not understand the low rating.
So…What Does Morenita Taste Like?
Morenita has a lovely balance of sweetness and hoppiness. The sweetness is there, but it does not take over. The hops show up too, but they do not bully the beer.
That balance is what made it work for me.
Some beers feel like they are fighting themselves. Too bitter. Too sweet. Too flat. Too much of one thing and not enough of another. Morenita did not feel that way. It felt delicate, smooth, and easy to enjoy.
It also had enough flavor to make me pay attention. That is important. I do not need a beer to shout, but I do need it to say something.
Morenita said enough.
Why I Trust My Own Taste
Beer ratings can be helpful, but they are not gospel.
The older I get, the less interested I am in pretending to like what everyone else likes. That applies to beer, food, travel, music, films, and honestly, life in general.
If I like something, I like it.
Morenita reminded me that taste is personal. It also reminded me that beer is part of a much bigger cultural story. I explored that history more deeply in Fluid Foundations: The Aura of Intoxication and the History of Beer & Wine.
Would I Buy Morenita Again?
Absolutely.
Morenita is the kind of beer I would happily order again, especially if I wanted something flavorful but not overwhelming. It would work well with a relaxed meal, a long conversation, or one of those beautiful Portugal afternoons where nobody is in a rush.
I would pair it with grilled meats, fries, burgers, roasted vegetables, or something with a little sweetness and spice. It has enough personality to hold its own, but it would not overpower the food.
It also made me think about how women experience beer culture differently. We are often not centered in beer conversations, even though women have always been part of brewing history. I wrote more about that in Celebrating Beer: Exploring Flavors, History, and Women’s Contributions.

If You Find This Beer in Portugal…
Try it for yourself before you let the ratings talk you out of it.
That is really the lesson Morenita gave me. Sometimes the beer that other people overlook might be exactly the one that works for you.
