Empowering Women Fish Dealers: My Journey in Mali

In my quest to empower women and promote sustainable development, I recently embarked on a transformative journey to Mali, West Africa. My focus was on collaborating with the Cooperative of Women Fish Dealers in Mopti, Mali, an organization comprising over 50 women who work in partnership with fishermen, wholesale buyers, fishing equipment sellers, and transporters. During my time in Mali, I conducted needs assessments for the women’s cooperative, conducted a value chain analysis of the country’s fishing sector, and made recommendations to the Mopti Regional Directorate of Fisheries to ensure the sector’s sustainable growth.

Geography of Mali
Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa, boasting a vast surface area of 1,241,000 square meters. It shares borders with seven neighboring countries, including Algeria to the north, Niger to the southeast, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire to the south, and Guinea, Senegal, and Mauritania to the west. The climate in Mali varies from subtropical to arid, with hot and dry conditions from February to June, followed by rainy and humid weather from June to November, and cool and dry conditions from November to February.

Population Diversity
With an estimated population of 14.5 million inhabitants, Mali is a melting pot of diverse ethnic groups. The Manding (Bambara or Bamana) ethnic group constitutes the majority, accounting for 52% of the population, followed by the Fulani at 11%, and various other groups such as the Saracolé, Songhai, Dogon, Tuareg, Maur, and Mianka. Each ethnic group contributes to Mali’s rich cultural tapestry, adding depth and diversity to the nation’s identity.

Religious Landscape
Religion plays a significant role in Malian society, with the majority of the population adhering to Islam, which represents 90% of the populace. Indigenous beliefs account for 6% of the population, while Christianity comprises 4%. Despite religious diversity, the people of Mali coexist peacefully, fostering mutual respect and understanding among different faith communities. While French serves as the official language, Bamanan remains the most widely spoken language, with approximately 80% of the population conversant in it.

Empowering Women in Fisheries
The Cooperative of Women Fish Dealers in Mopti, Mali, embodies the spirit of resilience, collaboration, and empowerment. By working together with fishermen, buyers, equipment sellers, and transporters, these women are breaking barriers and reshaping the fishing sector. Through needs assessments, value chain analysis, and strategic recommendations, we aim to ensure the sustainable growth and prosperity of the fishing industry in Mali while promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.

My journey in Mali has been both enlightening and enriching, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to positive change in the lives of women and communities. As we continue to work towards a more inclusive and sustainable future, let us embrace diversity, foster collaboration, and empower women to realize their full potential in every sector of society. Together, we can create a brighter tomorrow for Mali and beyond.
