National Nutrition Month: A Celebration of Sustainable Eating Habits
It’s time to bid farewell to National Nutrition Month® for this year, but the lessons we’ve learned should stick with us year-round. Since its inception 50 years ago, this annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has invited us to make informed food choices and develop healthy eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme, “Fuel for the Future,” put the spotlight on sustainability, reminding us that our food choices can have a positive impact on our health and the environment.
So, what can we do to continue fueling ourselves and the planet in a sustainable way? One way is to seek the help of a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist who can guide us in creating healthy habits that are sustainable and celebrate our unique needs. With their help, we can learn about the importance of each food group and how to properly plan and prepare nutritious meals and snacks in a safe way.
We can also educate ourselves on food safety basics, like washing, separating, safely cooking, and properly storing foods to reduce the risk of food poisoning. By practicing these habits, we can prevent food waste and save money while protecting ourselves and our loved ones from illness.
Another way to continue the National Nutrition Month® spirit is to enjoy holiday dishes and celebrate cultural cuisines and traditions while building a healthful eating plan that best fits our unique lifestyle and nutritional needs. By using various kitchen tools and meal preparation techniques, we can create meals that are not only delicious and nutritious, but also full of flavor.
And let’s not forget the importance of navigating the grocery store and planning nutritious meals for ourselves and our families. With a little bit of planning, we can eat well whether we’re at home or away, making small steps that can impact our overall health and the health of the planet.
