Airbnb Emergency Kit: What Every Vacation Rental Should Have Before Guests Arrive

Most Airbnb stays go exactly as planned. Guests arrive, settle in, explore the area, and leave with wonderful memories. Still, after more than 14 years as an Airbnb Superhost and Airbnb Ambassador, I’ve learned that good hosts prepare for the unexpected long before it ever happens.

An Airbnb emergency kit isn’t about expecting disasters. It’s about giving guests confidence that they’re staying in a home where someone has thoughtfully planned for emergencies. Whether it’s a power outage, severe weather, or a minor injury, having the right supplies available can make a stressful situation much easier to manage.

Start with a Quality First-Aid Kit

Every Airbnb should have an easy-to-find first-aid kit.

Stock it with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze pads, adhesive tape, tweezers, scissors, disposable gloves, instant cold packs, burn cream, and basic first-aid instructions.

Check expiration dates regularly and replace used supplies immediately.

Keep Emergency Contact Information Visible

Your guests shouldn’t have to search online during an emergency.

Include emergency phone numbers, the address of your property, the nearest hospital, urgent care center, pharmacy, and poison control information in your Airbnb Welcome Book or Airbnb House Manual.

Prepare for Power Outages

Storms and unexpected outages happen.

Keep flashlights with fresh batteries in an easy-to-find location. Battery-powered lanterns, portable phone chargers, and extra batteries can also make a significant difference if the power is out for several hours.

Label their location in your welcome materials so guests know exactly where to look.

Install Safety Equipment

Your emergency kit is only one part of a safe Airbnb.

Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors regularly, keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen, and make sure guests can easily identify emergency exits.

Prepare for Local Weather

Every destination has different risks.

If your property is located in a hurricane zone, wildfire area, tornado region, or snowy climate, include information specific to those conditions. Guests appreciate knowing what to do before severe weather arrives.

Provide Basic Household Emergency Supplies

Some of the most useful emergency items aren’t medical at all.

Keep bottled water, extra blankets, a manual can opener, matches or a lighter stored safely, a small toolkit, duct tape, and spare light bulbs available for unexpected situations.

These inexpensive supplies often become invaluable when guests need them.

Label Everything Clearly

An emergency kit only helps if guests can find it.

Store it in a clearly labeled location that’s easy to access but out of reach of young children when appropriate. Mention its location in your welcome book.

Inspect Your Kit Regularly

An emergency kit isn’t something you assemble once and forget.

Inspect it every few months to replace expired items, refill supplies that have been used, and confirm that batteries still work properly.

Routine maintenance keeps your preparation meaningful.
