Why Black Excellence Needs Room for Ordinary Life
Black excellence became part of my story long before it became a clean headline. I love celebrating excellence, but I worry when excellence becomes the only acceptable story.
Excellence Can Become A Cage
Black excellence matters. It challenges lies about ability, brilliance, and leadership. I have written about that through stories like Black Excellence in Tech.
Still, we should not have to be exceptional to deserve safety, care, pay, or respect.
Ordinary Is Human
Ordinary life is not failure. Resting, grieving, changing direction, needing help, and being imperfect are all part of being human.
A culture that only celebrates achievement can make people hide their pain.
A Wider Definition
I want a version of Black excellence that includes softness, community, creativity, and choice. I want room for ambition without worshiping burnout.
That wider story belongs on DG Speaks because our lives are bigger than applause.
