Salzburg Travel Guide: Austria’s Storybook Alpine City
Some cities feel like they were designed to be admired from a distance. Salzburg isn’t one of them. It invites you to wander. To duck down narrow alleyways, linger in quiet squares, look up at centuries-old buildings, and let the sound of church bells become the soundtrack to your day.
Long before I ever thought about Mozart or The Sound of Music, Salzburg captured my attention because it simply looked magical. Surrounded by the Austrian Alps, the city feels almost too beautiful to be real. Baroque churches rise above colorful streets, castles overlook the skyline, and mountains seem to frame every photograph. It’s one of those places that reminds me why I love traveling slowly instead of rushing from one attraction to the next.
A Walk Through Salzburg’s Storybook Old Town
Salzburg’s Old Town is a place where history doesn’t sit quietly behind museum walls. It surrounds you. Every street seems to reveal another beautifully preserved building, another hidden courtyard, or another ornate fountain that has watched generations pass by.
I could have spent hours simply wandering without a destination, but there are a few landmarks that deserve your attention. Salzburg Cathedral is magnificent, while the imposing Hohensalzburg Fortress watches over the city from high above. The climb—or funicular ride—is well worth it for the sweeping views across the rooftops and toward the Alps.
One of my favorite streets was Getreidegasse. Beyond the elegant storefronts and famous wrought-iron signs, there’s an energy that makes you want to slow your pace. It’s the perfect place to browse local shops, stop for coffee, and simply enjoy watching the city go about its day.

More Than Mozart and Movie Scenes
It’s impossible to talk about Salzburg without mentioning Mozart. His influence is woven throughout the city, from Mozart’s Birthplace to concerts held inside magnificent historic venues. Even if classical music isn’t normally your thing, it’s difficult not to appreciate the artistic legacy he left behind.
Then, of course, there’s The Sound of Music. Fans can visit many of the filming locations, including the beautiful Mirabell Gardens, but I appreciated that Salzburg never feels trapped by its most famous movie. Instead, the city celebrates all of its history, music, architecture, and culture equally.
Where the City Meets the Alps
One of the things I loved most about Salzburg is how effortlessly nature becomes part of the experience. You’re never far from mountain views, riverside walks, or opportunities to escape into the countryside.
Take the cable car to Untersberg Mountain if you have the chance. The panoramic views are spectacular, especially on a clear day. If you have extra time, consider venturing out to Lake Wolfgangsee or the breathtaking Hallstatt region, where alpine lakes and charming villages create some of Austria’s most iconic scenery.
One More Reason to Love Austria: The Food
Travel always comes back to food for me, and Salzburg certainly didn’t disappoint. Austrian cuisine is hearty without feeling heavy, making it perfect after a day spent exploring cobblestone streets and climbing castle hills.
Schnitzel, goulash, käsespätzle, warm pastries, and slices of rich Sachertorte all deserve a place on your itinerary. My advice is simple: don’t count calories while you’re here. Count experiences instead.

Some destinations impress you because they’re famous. Others stay with you because of how they make you feel. Salzburg falls firmly into the second category for me. It’s elegant without feeling pretentious, historic without feeling frozen in time, and lively without ever losing its sense of calm.
