Fat Fast Keto Experiment: Day One Journal
I recently started getting serious about biohacking, and honestly, it feels like the natural next step in my wellness journey. My background in agriculture, food systems, and public health has made me think more deeply about what I eat, how my body responds, and how I can become the healthiest version of myself.
After spending the past couple of years dealing with an autoimmune disorder and joint pain, I finally reached a point where I said, enough is enough. Since quarantine gave me more time at home, I decided to use that time to pay closer attention to my body.
My main goal right now is reducing body fat and inflammation. I want my joints to feel better, my energy to improve, and my body to feel strong enough for consistent movement.
I have been following a ketogenic diet for the past month, and I am down eight pounds. However, this past week has felt stagnant. Since I have not seen the body fat changes I hoped for, I decided to try a short fat fast keto experiment.
A fat fast is a short-term ketogenic strategy where most calories come from fat. I am not treating this as medical advice or a long-term plan. This is simply my personal wellness experiment, and I am tracking how my body responds.
My goal is to keep my meals very high in fat, very low in carbs, and moderate to low in protein for a few days. I will also track my weight, body fat percentage, muscle mass, blood pressure, pulse, and blood sugar.
I do not enjoy feeling hungry, so I am curious to see if the extra fat keeps me full. So far, that part has been surprisingly true.
Fat Fast Keto Day One
It is Friday, June 26, 2020, at 2 p.m., and I am starting day one of my fat fast keto experiment. I have been fasting since dinner at 6:30 p.m. yesterday.
Meal One: Bacon and Keto Coffee
- 2 slices sugar-free dry rubbed bacon
- Espresso roast coffee with 1 tablespoon vanilla, 1 tablespoon coconut oil, and 1 teaspoon stevia
This meal came out to about 292 calories, with 29 grams of fat, 8.3 grams of protein, and 0 grams of carbs. My son cooked the bacon, so it was crispier than I normally make it. Still, it worked for the plan.
Meal Two: Protein Matcha Latte
At 5:07 p.m., I had my second meal, which was a protein matcha latte. I forgot to take a photo of the actual drink, but the ingredients were simple.
- 8 ounces warm water
- 1 scoop vanilla collagen protein
- 1/2 teaspoon matcha
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon avocado oil
I blended everything until creamy. The flavor was mild, almost like skim milk with a hint of green tea. Next time, I would probably add more matcha earlier in the day.
This meal came out to about 355 calories, with 37.7 grams of fat, 6.2 grams of protein, and 0.5 grams of carbs. It was filling, even if the flavor was not exciting.
I have to say, I felt amazing by this point. My energy was strong, and my mental clarity felt sharp. I even wrote two articles that day, so clearly something was working.
Meal Three: Cayenne Chicken Broth With Shrimp
My last meal of the day was warm, salty, spicy, and surprisingly satisfying.
- 3 ounces shrimp sautéed in 1 tablespoon bacon grease, seasoned with turmeric, garlic powder, and sea salt
- 1.5 cups organic chicken broth with 1 tablespoon bacon grease, 1 tablespoon oil, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne, 1 teaspoon pink Himalayan sea salt, onion powder, and garlic powder
This meal came out to about 408 calories, with 26.7 grams of fat, 12.1 grams of protein, and less than 1 gram of carbs.
End of Day One
My six-hour eating window closed at 8 p.m., which means day one of my fat fast keto experiment is complete. I came close to my macro goals, although not as close as I wanted.
Part of that came from not planning the meals ahead of time. Still, I finished the day feeling good, energized, and not hungry at all.
In the morning, I plan to check my blood pressure, pulse, and blood sugar. I am definitely a numbers girl when it comes to tracking wellness progress.
Supplements I Am Using
For supplements, I have been using HUM Nutrition. I like that their formulas are clearly labeled, and I appreciate that they make it easy to choose products based on your lifestyle and goals.
I started using HUM because I wanted cleaner supplements without a lot of guesswork. Their questionnaire helped me choose products that made sense for my routine, and I have enjoyed having them as part of this wellness reset.
If you decide to try HUM Nutrition, you can use my referral code 232547 for an extra $10 off your first order. They also often offer savings when you purchase three or more products.
Day One Review
Good morning! It is Saturday, June 27, 2020, at 10:30 a.m., and I woke up feeling great. Yesterday’s fat fast keto day went better than expected, and I am ready for day two.
My blood pressure was 96/69, and my blood glucose was 83. I am still not hungry, which is helpful because my first meal will not be until after 2 p.m.
I also lost one pound since yesterday. My subcutaneous and visceral fat percentages each dropped by 0.10%. That may not sound like much, but it felt like progress after several days without movement.
Today, I want to hit my macros more precisely. The struggle is real, but I am actually enjoying the experiment so far.
