What I Want My Stories to Make Room For
At the end of the year, I keep thinking about what I want my stories to make room for. Not just topics. People. Questions. Memory. Joy. Truth. Stories make room when they are written with care.
More than content
I do not want to create content just to fill space. I want to build a body of work that helps people see food, travel, culture, and women’s lives with more depth.
This sits with digital storytelling and Black women storytellers. Voice matters, especially when the usual rooms do not make enough space.
Room for complexity
I want my writing to hold beauty and critique together. A destination can be stunning and unequal. A meal can be delicious and tied to hard labor. A woman can be joyful and tired. All of that belongs in the story.
That complexity feels honest to me. It is how life actually works.
The work ahead
Tools and resources from my Amazon shop or Calm can support the life around the writing, but the heart of the work is attention.
The bigger lesson is that storytelling is a form of care. When I make room for truth, I make room for people.
