Camino Pharmacy Kit: What I Actually Used on the Camino de Santiago
One of the questions I get asked most often after walking the Camino de Santiago is, “What should I pack in my pharmacy kit?” My answer is always the same: less than you think, but more thoughtfully than you think.
Before my Camino, I spent weeks watching YouTube videos, reading blogs, and comparing packing lists from experienced pilgrims. Everyone seemed to have a different opinion, and by the time I finished my research, I was convinced I needed an entire pharmacy in my backpack.
As it turns out, I didn’t.
What I really needed was a lightweight Camino pharmacy kit filled with the essentials that would help me stay healthy, comfortable, and walking day after day.
Your Feet Will Decide Everything
If there’s one thing the Camino teaches you very quickly, it’s that your feet are in charge.
Blisters are probably the most talked-about challenge on the Camino, and for good reason. Fortunately, they’re also one of the easiest problems to prepare for.
My pharmacy kit always included blister bandages, athletic tape, alcohol wipes, and a small needle for draining blisters when necessary. Prevention became much more important than treatment.
Taking just a few minutes each evening to check my feet often prevented much bigger problems later.
Comfort Matters More Than Toughness
Many of us begin the Camino wanting to prove how tough we are.
After a few days, that attitude usually changes.
I quickly realized there was nothing heroic about suffering unnecessarily. A little muscle cream, an electrolyte drink, or a pain reliever could make the difference between enjoying the next day’s walk and struggling through every kilometer.
My Camino pharmacy kit wasn’t about preparing for emergencies. It was about making recovery easier so I could continue walking comfortably.
Don’t Forget the Little Things
Some of the smallest items became the most valuable.
- Blister bandages
- Athletic or KT tape
- Electrolyte packets
- Pain reliever
- Anti-inflammatory medication
- Alcohol wipes
- Tweezers
- Nail clippers
- Safety pins
- Lip balm with SPF
- Sunscreen
- Anti-chafing balm
- Prescription medications
None of these items weighed very much, but together they made my days considerably more comfortable.
One Place You Might Not Think to Shop
If you’re traveling from the United States, don’t overlook stores like Dollar Tree before you leave.
Many basic pharmacy supplies, including pain relievers, alcohol wipes, adhesive bandages, cotton swabs, lip balm, and travel-size toiletries can be purchased very inexpensively.
There’s no reason to spend a fortune assembling your Camino pharmacy kit when many essentials are readily available at discount stores.
Remember That Spain Has Excellent Pharmacies
One mistake many first-time pilgrims make is trying to prepare for every possible situation.
You don’t need to.
One of the wonderful things about walking the Camino in Spain is that pharmacies are easy to find. Pharmacists are knowledgeable, helpful, and accustomed to assisting pilgrims.
I recommend bringing enough supplies to get started and then replacing items as you go instead of carrying weeks’ worth of medication on your back.

Shop My Camino Essentials
After completing my Camino, I created an Amazon Camino Essentials Shopping List featuring many of the pharmacy supplies, comfort care products, lightweight clothing, and gear that I personally recommend. Rather than buying everything on every packing list you find online, choose the items that fit your own needs, the season you’re walking, and your travel style.

One of the greatest lessons the Camino taught me was that I needed far less than I imagined. Every unnecessary ounce became noticeable after a few miles, while every thoughtfully packed item earned its place in my backpack.
Your Camino pharmacy kit doesn’t have to be perfect. It simply needs to give you the confidence to keep putting one foot in front of the other. The rest of the journey has a way of taking care of itself.
