Best Walking Shoes for Europe: What I Learned on the Camino
If there’s one thing I refuse to compromise on when I travel, it’s my shoes. A bad meal is disappointing. A bad hotel is frustrating. Bad shoes can ruin an entire trip.
After spending years exploring Europe on foot and walking the Camino de Santiago, I’ve learned that finding the best walking shoes for Europe isn’t about buying the most expensive pair. It’s about finding the shoes that fit your feet, your travel style, and the kind of journey you’re planning.
I’ve made mistakes along the way, and my feet have definitely let me know when I chose poorly.
Your Trip Will Be Measured in Steps
Even travelers who don’t consider themselves hikers are often surprised by how much they walk in Europe.
Historic city centers are designed for pedestrians. You’ll wander through cobblestone streets, climb castle stairs, stroll riverfront promenades, and spend hours exploring museums and neighborhoods.
It’s not unusual to walk 15,000 to 25,000 steps in a single day without even realizing it.
That’s why comfortable footwear isn’t optional. It’s one of the most important investments you’ll make before your trip.
My Camino Changed Everything
Walking the Camino de Santiago completely changed the way I think about shoes.
Before my pilgrimage, I focused mostly on appearance. After walking day after day with everything I owned on my back, comfort became my top priority.
I learned that even a small pressure point can become a major problem after ten or fifteen miles.
I also learned that no shoe is perfect for everyone. The best shoe is the one that fits your foot, has been properly broken in, and allows you to walk comfortably for hours.
What I Look for Now
- Excellent cushioning
- Good arch support
- A roomy toe box
- Reliable traction on wet pavement and gravel
- Breathable materials
- Lightweight construction
I also size up slightly for long-distance walking since feet naturally swell throughout the day.
Don’t Buy Them the Week Before
This may be the most important advice I can give.
Never take brand-new shoes on a major trip.
Wear them around your neighborhood. Walk several miles. Climb stairs. Wear the socks you’ll actually travel in.
It’s much easier to discover a problem at home than halfway across Spain.
Walking Shoes Are Only Part of the Equation
The right socks matter.
So does your backpack weight.
So does taking breaks.
And so does having a good Camino pharmacy kit in case you develop a hotspot or blister despite your best preparation.
Your feet deserve a complete support system, not just a great pair of shoes.
Shop Smarter, Not Harder
I’ve created an Amazon Camino Essentials Shopping List that includes footwear accessories, hiking socks, blister prevention products, recovery items, and other gear I’ve found helpful while traveling.
Rather than chasing every new trend, I recommend investing in quality gear that you’ll use for years.

I’ve come to believe that good travel isn’t about moving as quickly as possible. It’s about moving comfortably enough that you can slow down, notice the details, and truly enjoy where you are. The best walking shoes for Europe won’t just protect your feet. They’ll give you the freedom to keep exploring long after everyone else has called it a day.
