Preparing for the Camino: From Madrid to Pamplona
After soaking in Madrid’s beauty, it was time to head north. This was the moment I had dreamed about for months. I wasn’t just traveling anymore. I was officially preparing for the Camino.
Packing my bag was both exciting and nerve-racking. Did I have enough? Did I bring too much? Every pilgrim wrestles with these questions. The truth is, you never know until you start walking.

Reflections on the Train
The train ride from Madrid to Pamplona was peaceful. I watched the Spanish countryside roll by fields, hills, and small towns that seemed frozen in time. As I looked out the window, I thought about why I was doing this.
At nearly 50, I wanted something meaningful. I wanted a journey that connected me back to myself, to nature, and to something greater. Preparing for the Camino wasn’t just about shoes and backpacks. It was about saying yes to growth and transformation.
Meeting Other Pilgrims
Even on the train, I started spotting fellow pilgrims. You can usually tell by the backpacks, scallop shells, and the mix of excitement and nerves on their faces. Some were solo travelers like me, others were in pairs or small groups.
We exchanged smiles and small conversations. There’s something comforting about realizing you’re not the only one stepping into the unknown. Preparing for the Camino instantly feels lighter when you know others are walking the same path.
Lessons Before the First Step
One thing I learned quickly is that pilgrim life starts before the trail. Lugging my bag reminded me to pack light. Choosing comfort over fashion reminded me this wasn’t just a vacation. It was a pilgrimage.
Preparing for the Camino taught me patience. It reminded me to let go of control and trust that whatever I forgot or miscalculated, I could figure out along the way.

The Road to Pamplona
By the time I reached Pamplona, I felt ready. Nervous, yes, but ready. I had made it this far, and the trail was waiting.
If you’re thinking about this journey, don’t stress about being perfectly prepared. The Camino has a way of teaching you what you need as you go.
Looking Ahead
Pamplona was more than just a stop along the way. It was the threshold, the place where my Camino would truly begin.
