Why I Chose the Camino for My Wellness Travel After 40
I’m about to do something I’ve never done before. I’m going to walk 500 miles across Spain. This fall, I’ll be setting off on the Camino de Santiago, and I’ve chosen it as a way to reconnect with my body, my spirit, and my intention to live well after 50.
This isn’t just a trip. It’s a personal journey into healing, strength, and softness. After years of pushing through life’s demands, I’m choosing a new path. I want my 50th year to begin with purpose and this walk is part of that story.
The Camino as a Path to Self-Healing
Lately, my body has been asking me to slow down. My range of motion has decreased, I’ve felt stiff for far too long, and sedentary routines have left me feeling disconnected from myself. I knew I needed to do something different, something that wasn’t just a workout plan or a wellness retreat.
Walking the Camino offers me time to move, reflect, and rebuild trust in my body. It’s not about performance. It’s about presence.
Why the Camino Is the Right Wellness Travel Choice
I chose the Camino for many reasons, but mostly because it offers:
- Structure without stress: The path is clearly marked, but the pace is your own.
- Movement with meaning: Every step is a chance to let go of what no longer serves me.
- Time outdoors: Sunshine, fresh air, and quiet mornings walking through small villages.
- Affordable simplicity: The Camino is one of the most budget-friendly ways to travel with purpose.
Unlike quick trips or curated experiences, this is slow travel. It’s soft living with sturdy shoes.

I’m not an athlete. I’m not going in with peak physical fitness. What I am bringing is intention. I’ve been building up my strength with daily walks, stretching, and light strength work. I’m adjusting my nutrition and preparing my mind for the discomfort that may come alongside the beauty that surely will.
I’m also being gentle with myself. My goal isn’t to race to Santiago. It’s to experience each moment with curiosity and grace.
The Soft Life Meets the Pilgrim Life
Some people think the Camino is all grit. But I believe it’s also about softness. I plan to carry a few simple comforts, such my favorite tea, my journal, and a quiet playlist for sacred stops along the way. I’ll seek out slow breakfasts, warm conversations, and moments of awe.
Even on a pilgrim path, I’m bringing my version of the soft life with me.
Why This Camino Journey Matters
This walk is about reclaiming the parts of myself I’ve neglected. It’s about trusting that even at 49, I can start something new, something big, and something bold. I want to feel stronger in my body. I want to return home with a deeper sense of self-trust. And I want to inspire other women to know it’s not too late to change your story.
