Airbnb Cleaning Checklist: How to Deliver a Five-Star Stay Every Time

If there’s one thing I’ve learned after more than 14 years as an Airbnb Superhost, it’s this: guests may forgive dated furniture or simple décor, but they almost never forgive a dirty home.

Cleanliness is one of the fastest ways to earn five-star reviews, and it’s also one of the quickest ways to lose them. The good news is that you don’t need a professional cleaning company to create a spotless space. You simply need a reliable system that you follow every single time.

Over the years, my Airbnb cleaning checklist has evolved with every guest who pointed out something I missed and every lesson I learned along the way. Today, it helps me prepare my home with confidence before every arrival.

Start with Fresh Eyes

Before I begin cleaning, I walk into the room as though I’m seeing it for the first time.

Would I notice dust on the ceiling fan? Does the room smell fresh? Are fingerprints visible on the glass door? Looking at your home through the eyes of a guest helps you notice things that become invisible after living there every day.

Always Begin with the Bedroom

The bed is usually the first thing guests inspect.

Wash all bedding between guests, even if it appears clean. Replace pillowcases, inspect mattress protectors, smooth out wrinkles, and make sure decorative pillows are spotless.

A comfortable, fresh bed immediately creates confidence.

Bathrooms Should Feel Spotless

Bathrooms deserve extra attention because they’re one of the biggest factors influencing guest reviews.

Disinfect sinks, toilets, showers, tubs, mirrors, faucets, and light switches. Replace used toiletries, refill soap dispensers, provide fresh towels, and double-check that there is plenty of toilet paper.

Guests notice details like water spots, hair, and toothpaste residue almost immediately.

Don’t Forget the Kitchen

The kitchen should look ready for someone to prepare their very next meal.

Clean countertops, wipe cabinet handles, sanitize appliances, empty the refrigerator, wash dishes, replace kitchen towels, and check that coffee supplies are fully stocked.

Dust Before You Vacuum

Cleaning works best from the top down.

Dust ceiling fans, shelves, windowsills, lamps, artwork, and furniture before vacuuming or mopping the floors. Otherwise, dust simply settles onto the surfaces you’ve already cleaned.

Sanitize High-Touch Surfaces

Guests interact with many more surfaces than we realize.

Remember to disinfect doorknobs, cabinet handles, remote controls, light switches, thermostats, appliance handles, keypads, and stair railings.

These small details demonstrate care and attention.

Check Every Appliance

Don’t assume everything still works perfectly.

Turn on lamps, test televisions, check the coffee maker, run the microwave, verify the refrigerator is cooling properly, and confirm that your Wi-Fi is working before guests arrive.

Restock Before Every Stay

I keep a storage shelf with backup supplies so I never run out between reservations.

Paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, coffee, tea, dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, tissues, and cleaning products should always be replenished before guests check in.

This simple habit saves time and prevents last-minute shopping trips.

Finish with a Final Walkthrough

When cleaning is finished, I take one last tour through the house.

I turn on the lights, open and close doors, flush toilets, check the temperature, look in mirrors, and even sit on the bed for a moment.

Those last five minutes often catch small details that would otherwise be missed.

Create a Cleaning Routine You Can Repeat

The best cleaning checklist isn’t the longest one. It’s the one you’ll actually follow every time.

Over the years, my routine has become second nature because I clean each room in the same order. That consistency reduces mistakes and helps every guest enjoy the same high standard.
