One of the biggest changes I’ve made during my 14 years as an Airbnb Superhost and Airbnb Ambassador was switching to self check-in. At first, I wasn’t sure if I would miss greeting every guest personally. What I discovered instead was that most travelers appreciated the flexibility even more.

Today’s guests often arrive after delayed flights, long road trips, or late-night events. They don’t necessarily want to coordinate arrival times. They simply want an easy, stress-free way to get inside and begin enjoying their stay.

Make sure your house number is clearly visible from the street, especially at night. Good exterior lighting and simple directions help travelers arrive with confidence.

Prepare a Backup Plan

Technology is wonderful, but every host should have a backup plan.

Keep spare batteries, an alternative way to access your property, and a phone nearby during arrival times. Hopefully you’ll never need those backups, but having them provides peace of mind.

Welcome Guests Even If You’re Not There

Self check-in doesn’t have to feel impersonal.

A handwritten welcome note, snacks, bottled water, or a thoughtfully prepared coffee station immediately reminds guests that someone cared enough to prepare for their arrival.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that guests remember convenience.

Easy parking, clear instructions, dependable Wi-Fi, comfortable beds, and a stress-free arrival all contribute to glowing reviews. Self check-in fits naturally into that experience because it removes unnecessary obstacles.
