Why I Like Starting the Year With a Walk
I have never believed a new year demands a brand-new person. That’s too much pressure for a single day on the calendar. Instead, I like beginning the year with something simple. Starting the year with a walk reminds me that meaningful change usually begins with one small step, not one dramatic announcement.
A walk gives me time to settle into the year before life starts racing ahead. Instead of chasing resolutions, I let my mind catch up with my body. By the time I return home, I usually feel less overwhelmed and much more grounded.
A Simple Ritual That Asks Very Little
Walking feels honest because it never asks me to prove anything. I don’t have to break records, buy expensive equipment, or convince anyone that this will be my “best year ever.” I simply put one foot in front of the other and pay attention.
Along the way, I notice what I’m carrying into the new year. Some years I bring excitement. Other years I carry uncertainty, grief, or exhaustion. Most years, if I’m honest, I carry a little of everything. Thankfully, the road never asks me to sort those feelings out before I begin.
That perspective connects naturally with my reflections on slow travel and women and rest. In both cases, slowing down allows me to notice what constant movement often hides.

Every Neighborhood Has a Story to Tell
One reason I enjoy walking is that familiar places never stay exactly the same. A new mural appears on a wall. Someone opens a neighborhood café. Flowers bloom where bare branches stood only weeks before. Even the same streets reveal something different when I choose to move through them more slowly.
Walking also reminds me that travel begins long before I board an airplane. Curiosity starts close to home. The habit of paying attention travels with me whether I’m exploring another country or strolling through my own neighborhood.
Comfort Helps Me Stay Present
I don’t need much for these walks. Comfortable shoes, a lightweight crossbody bag, and a small notebook usually come with me. If I discover something worth remembering, I like writing it down before the moment slips away.
If you’re putting together your own walking kit this year, you’ll find some of my favorite travel essentials in my Amazon travel shop.
One Step Is Still Progress
Every January reminds us to set goals. However, I think we spend too much time talking about destinations and not enough time appreciating the first few steps. Walking teaches me that progress rarely arrives all at once. Instead, it grows through consistency, patience, and the willingness to keep moving.
That is why I return to this ritual year after year. I don’t begin with pressure. I begin with movement. Then I trust the journey to unfold one step at a time.
